This week in grade 1 science class, we talked about weather. Our main focus was on the water cycle. As an activity, we made artificial snow to simulate how snow looks and feels. This gave students that have never seen snow the opportunity to experience a little bit of it, as well as having the students that have seen it compare real snow with the artificial snow. In grade 2 science, we started learning about different parts of a plant. We took a look at the plants that we have been growing for the last 2 months. The students can all correctly identify roots, stem, and leaves. We also went outside to look other at the bigger plants to see if they have the same parts as small plants. We also learned about fruits and seeds and why people and animals need plants. In grade 3, we started learning about energy and it's different forms. We investigated how light behaves, shining it through different materials and seeing what it can go through and what is cannot. In grades 4 and 5, we started our science projects! We will be doing science projects the whole semester. This week, the students came up with their own science questions and their hypotheses. In grade 6 science, we started learning about different properties of matter. The grade 6 started learning about the more difficult concept of mass, weight, density, and volume. They also learned that there is a lot of math in science too. We also did a very simple experiment where we tested to see what things can float on water and the reasons why it can or cannot float. The grade 6 students will continue to explore these elements as the semester goes on.
