Grade 1 In the first grade, we have talked about the pop artist Andy Warhol these two weeks. They had a good understanding of what pop art is. They knew what pop artists are fond of using to make art, like everyday objects, celebrities, cartoons and famous brands. We also appreciated some of his famous artwork and recreated one of them, which is Campbell’s soup cans. Students drew in the brand of soup they are and named the flavor of soup. Grade 2 In the second grade, we are studying a Japanese female artist- Yayoi Kusama. We talked about her lifetime and stories. Students learned about that most of her artwork was influenced by her mental illness. She created various kinds of works of art, like paintings, sculptures, and performances, but they have one thing in common-dots. In this project, students are going to design a raincoat by covering it with colored stickers. Let’s be obsessed with dots! Grade 3-6 In 3rd grade our class worked on tree frog drawings, they used different paint and markers to create the pictures. In 4th grade students created raccoon collages and sea horses. The raccoons were made with different glued papers and markers. The seahorses were made with watercolor and collage. 5th grade students studied the artist Jim Dine and created drawings of tools. We covered value and proper shading technique in more detail with this lesson. Our 6th grade class learned about the Lascaux cave paintings and made cave paintings using earth tones, in a separate lesson we also covered circle geometry in art Jim Dine , Lascaux and CampbellGrade 1 Last weeks’ grade 1 social studies was cut short because of the field trip to Yilan however, we still managed to do quite a lot. Both classes learned what it takes to be a hero. They should know by now that everyone could be a hero as long as they willing to help each other. We also looked at a very special hero from the United States; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I explained to the students in a very simplified way that Dr. King was a person who fought for colored people’s freedom in the United States and that people look at him as a hero now. The Sun class spent some time drawing on how students envision themselves in 20 years. Some students actually had some idea of what they want to do! Grade 2 After midterms, Grade 2 students have begun exploring the past, present, and future. Students are building their own timelines, highlighting their own historic moments such as “My First Birthday” and “My First Day of School.” We hope parents will be excited to see our final projects come June. Students are encouraged to bring in old photos to display on their timelines. Grade 3 As a result of the midterm, we found that some of the students lack an understanding of the history of Keelung. So, through group drama, we strengthened the students' understanding of the history of Keelung. The students were very creative. They made a lot of props with paper. They created different versions of scripts to use for the play. Grade 4 The grade 4 finished their class the Yami people. They learned the importance of fishing for the Yami. They have also looked at how the Yami assembled their boat. After that lesson, the students began on their end of the year presentation. They had to pick an animal in which a student would have to act as in their presentation. Their homework was to come up with reasons to show that their animal is better than other groups’ so we will find out this week which group’s animal will come out on top. The trip to Yilan’s Lanyang Museum, the students were able to see some of the things that they have learned in their class such as the Kavalan. Grade 5 Fifth grade has worked hard on their Borders Project. As we begin our presentations this week, students will learn how to present in front of an audience and how to be a respectful listener. We have also begun to study the difficult topic, “What Makes a Country” and “Is Taiwan a Country?” Students will challenge themselves during class discussions and become engaged in this controversial debate. Grade 6 The grade 6 students continued their studies on countries around the world. Their class of the week was on Japan. I brought “geta” to show the students. Most of them were fascinated by them. The students have seen geta before as they could correctly identify the name in Chinese. They had fun listening to the sound that they make. I also brought a “matsuri” or festival Pikachu doll. The lesson was mostly focused on post-war Japan and their ability to rebuild themselves. I showed them many cultural aspects of Japan as well as their industrial prowess. We started our last chapter of the book for this year! We are learning all about who scientists are and what scientists do. We are observing and inquiring about all the things around us, just like real scientists. We paired up in small groups and asked questions about the things in the room around us and then described them. Grade 2 The last chapter focuses on the nature of the scientific method. We are learning the steps on how to analyze carefully. Below are Nash and Eason who thought of relevant questions to ask when it comes to analyzing plants and rocks. Grade 3 Grade three enjoyed learning about mixtures this week. We mixed sugar and salt to demonstrate a solid mixture and then mixed them in water to demonstrate that sometimes putting a solid in a liquid can make it appear to disappear or dissolve. Students also learned about physical changes. They now know that we can change many things about an object and though it may look different, it is still the same type of matter. They enjoyed adding coloring to water, crushed ice and making cool shapes from paper in their physical changes lab. Grade 4 For 4th grade, this week was all about forces. We used a game of hand wrestling to demonstrate that when forces are balanced, no motion happens and when they are unbalanced, that is when movement occurs. We also watched a video this week that further explained the differences between the different types of forces. Their vocabulary words for this week were as follows: Unbalanced, balanced, motion, still, gravity, still, and friction. Erie demonstrated their understanding of the different forces in a lab. They were given the different categories of forces and had to use classroom objects like balance scales, to physically show their understanding of the concepts. Grade 5 This week we finished our lesson on fossils. There was no better way to say goodbye to our dinosaur friends than to write a haiku and present it to our classmates. Grade 6 This week 6th grade studied how the seasons are formed. They were already familiar with the characteristics of each season, but now they can explain exactly where the earth is positioned during each season and whether one hemisphere is receiving more sunlight than the other. They know that the tilt of the earth’s axis is a major contributor of the varying temperatures across the earth year round. They made posters to depict each season and used them to present what they had learned. |
