The overall grades were decent but I think there is still room for improvement. We corrected the quiz so kids should have a better understanding about the chapter lessons. I think they should study more on the family tree from the study guide. Grade 2 Excellent job Second Graders! I’m excited to say that almost all the second graders did well on their Chapter 4 Quiz. The class average was above a 75. As a reward, the kids got to enjoy Pearl/Bubble Milk Tea, a food from Taiwanese culture, and watch a movie about culture, Rio! We spent some time learning the different foods and festivals of Taiwan. We also enjoyed learning about the different cultures in Germany, Korea, Mali, Kenya, and Mexico. The kids’ favorite traditional dance was from Germany. We are gearing up for our midterms. Make sure to review the quiz questions and the Midterm slip containing the contents on our exam. Grade 3 We reviewed the topic urban, suburban, and rural communities. We also finished the quiz on the topic. The students were tasked with drawing a picture that contains urban, suburban, and rural communities. Most of the students were able to understand the features of the different kinds of communities. Grade 4 The grade 4's went on a field trip to the National Taiwan Museum in Taipei. They learned a lot about the origin of life on our planet in the morning. The students even got a chance to see some life size replicas of dinosaur fossils. I think they were really awed after seeing the huge displays. After lunch, we learned about the camphor wood and their uses. Kids also did many activities such as measuring tree growths and various hands on activities involving camphor wood. The field trip will tie-in to the lesson of deforestation. Grade 5 This past week, we continued to explore another famous political and physical border, The Berlin Wall. We enjoyed a documentary about the Berlin Wall and how a border can impact friends, family, or even neighbors. We have spent a lot of time in the computer lab as kids begin their group project. Students learned about plagiarism and citing resources. Students are also learning how to research using sources other than Wikipedia. We will continue to work in our groups and begin writing and constructing our projects in PowerPoint or on a poster board. Grade 6 The grade 6's played a game of jeopardy of what they have learned so far. The game really showed how much they understood and most kids understood quite a bit which a very good sign. We will continue to learn more about different countries so the kids will develop a better sense of the world this semester. Say Cheese!Grade 1 Moon and Sun have been exploring our solar system and its powers. This week, we learned all about what happens when the Earth’s orbit and tilt changes. We discussed how this affects our daily lives from weather to farming. Here is a picture Leo drew of the four seasons! Grade 2 Huron and Ontario have been exploring space. Our Patterns of Space books are slowly filling up with a ton of information and drawings. We are learning about the connection we as people are making with space and what astronaut accomplishments mean for all of us. Grade 3 We are learning all about fossils this week: what they are, how they are formed, and how they are discovered. Students were asked to research fossils on the internet for homework and say what kind of fossil they were and whether the animal or plant was extinct or not. Sandy posted a photo of this dinosaur fossil found in Wales and Howard posted the following photo of a mammoth fossil found in Russia. For a hands-on activity, made clay using flour, water, salt and food coloring. They then pressed a shell into their mold. We poured plaster in their molds to replicate how sediment can settle in prints made by animals and plants in nature and then turn to rock. When the plaster hardened, the students model fossils were complete. Grade 4 Severe weather. Living in Taiwan, the students are very familiar with getting ready for one type of severe weather: typhoons. In addition to typhoons, we are learning about staying safe during tornadoes and thunderstorms. We watched videos of how much damage these events can cause and students learned new vocabulary words like thunder, lightning, shock and floods. For their assessment this week, students demonstrated how to prepare for one of these severe weather events through plays. They were each given a disaster and came up with creative conversations for sharing how to keep safe before or during them. Grade 5 LochNess and Lomond just finished their presentations on sharing with the class what characteristics they have inherited from their parents. We also learned about the various characteristics that makes each animal unique. We followed this by watching a cool documentary on the plant life cycle. Grade 6 Our lessons this week focused on climate. We are learning how mountains, oceans and latitude affect the climate of surrounding areas. Students used the computer lab to research the climate of different areas in Taiwan: coastal cities, areas to the east and west of mountain ranges, and areas at high elevation. They are putting together a 5 minute presentation to present their findings next week and will see whether their findings reflect what the literature says about climate. All about seasonsOff to space we go with the Grade 2'sGrade 3 ActivitiesGrade 4's talking about what to do in severe weatherGrade 6 studying weather maps國小部鼓勵小朋友參加「閱讀星球-雙子星」活動,301班蘇威豪同學積極練習「閱讀星球-雙子星」題目,獲得主辦單位許願獎書籍一本。此項活動於3月17日截止,請家長持續協助鼓勵小朋友練習3/13/2017
Grade 1
The first graders have learned different jobs in our community, such as dentist, salesperson, trash collector, firefighter etc. They also learned numbers 40 to 49, phonics of letter c, h, i and u and their representing words. The students are making great progress. Most of them go home and read to their parents on a daily basis. I feel really proud of them. Grade 2 The second graders have learned the reading "Jane Has a Job". Jane is a mail carrier. She brings mail to people. All students participate well and read the story to their parents. We also introduced future tense (will + verb) and the rules of long a sound. In sum, the students are learning with enthusiasm and passion. Grade 3 Students have been working on their writing using grammar learned so far. We have been tackling parts of speech which include nouns and adjectives. Verb tenses have also been introduced to encourage the children to speak correctly when talking about past, present and future events. We also started a new unit (Then and now). We are exploring the differences between periods of time and how things have changed. Grade 4 Great Ideas has been the topic for the past few weeks. We are exploring how people throughout history have come up with some useful ideas for the world. The children are learning how those ideas and inventions make our lives easier today. Grammar has also been a focal point for the lessons as we try to further improve the speaking and writing ability of the students. Grade 5 We have been discussing powerful forces of nature for the past few weeks. Students have been learning how most of these forces work and affect us in our daily lives. Focus has been put on some of the familiar ones that occur in Taiwan to try and give the students context. Grammar has also been a focal point for the lessons as we try to further improve the speaking and writing ability of the students. Grade 6 The students have been learning about the importance of where we live and how different people live in different environments. We explored the students’ preferences which included living in the city or countryside. Writing has also been the focus for the class as we try to continuously improve thier writing. Grade 1 In the first grade, we talked about one of elements of art-shape. We began with geometric shapes and organic shapes. Students were able to identify the difference between these two groups. Besides the common organic shapes we can find in nature, students also know how to simplify objects to get more organic shapes. They were taught that artists usually start by drawing shapes and then add in details, so they knew how artists use shapes in art. In this project, we’re going to create abstract shape art using any desire shapes. Grade 2 In grade 2, we’ve been learning about patterns since the new semester started. We focused on three different types of patterns: regular patterns, irregular patterns and radial patterns. Students were able to classify patterns into different groups by observing them to see they are repeated in a predictable way, an unpredictable way or around the center point. After that, students started to learn how to create patterns in these three different types using lines, colors and shapes. They loved this project! The patterns they made were beautiful and lovely. Can’t wait to teach them to make more art with patterns! Grade 3
We started new projects in all grades for our new semester. Third graders learned about different marine life and created collage work of sea turtles. Some students created collage elephants using the same style. We learned about the American pop artist Jim Dine and created heart paintings in his style. Grade 6 The 6th graders learned 1 point perspective and the German artist Anselm Kiefer, they created landscape perspective paintings of train tracks in field of flowers. We are looking forward to learning about different artists and making interesting art this semester. |
