This week the first graders spent some time reviewing for their upcoming quiz. Everyone got a chance to showcase their ability to work independently and most were able to tackle the review material with ease. Knowing about other nationalities and cultures is important so as to understand other parts of the world. The second graders had a chance to learn about American culture and some the history behind the ethnicities that coexist together as Americans. We related some of the material to their social studies class and how migration played a part. The third and fourth graders continued to learn grammar and do readings in the workbook. Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun! The 5th graders were learning about the varying styles of storytelling used all over the world. They were learning how different cultures use certain styles to pass on life lessons. Later on in the week, they had to submit their own tales, written in their own words.
The sixth graders were working on their projects for the end of the semester. They also spent some time doing more writing practice in the form of a persuasive essay. Most of the students were able to produce some great work and others still need some assistance. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina In first grade, the main topic of science class for the past week was the sky. We talked about the day sky and the night sky. We also talked about the sun, and how it changes position during the course of the day. In second grade, we learned the similarities and the differences in animals and plants. The same kind of plants and animals have many similarities but they also have many differences. I used people as an example of how we can look very different; some people are taller, some people have different skin colors, some of us have curly hair. They did a crossword puzzle for homework, most of the answers can be found on the textbook and many of the students did very well. In third grade, we explored the properties of SOUND! Low sounds, high sounds; soft sounds, loud sounds. The kids enjoyed learning about sound by making their own instrument with a long piece of string and their desk. They investigated how sound changes if the string is longer or shorter. In the fourth and fifth grades, we are continuing our science experiments and beginning to write up our reports and make our powerpoint presentations. The topics of the students' science experiments vary greatly, from questions about plants to ice cubes, but the PROCESS of science and experimentation is the same. Students are putting their knowledge of the scientific method into action and learning important teamwork skills along the way! In sixth grade, we started learning about mixtures. We also learned that there are different kinds of mixtures like solution. We learned that there are different ways to separate mixtures like magnetism, filtration, evaporation, and etc.... This class is very important for the students because mixture is a fundamental idea that they need to understand for the upcoming small activity in which they would put what they have learned into use.
In the 1st grade, we focused on how maps can show places: both big and small and how they can show you where you need to go. Each student drew a map of Taiwan.
In the 2nd grade, the students are learning about maps, map keys, and directions. Students are using information and vocabulary they learned last to help them. The students created their own maps and key. They included a description of their maps as well as directions. They students are showing good understanding of directions. Have your child use a map and key to help you travel around Keelung; you might be impressed!
In the 3rd grade, the students are learning about longitude and latitude. The students created miniature globes with vocabulary to help them remember the differences in their vocabulary. The students also made predictions about climate and temperature around the world in summer. Then, we looked at actual temperatures on a world map. From looking at the temperature map, students could deduce that temperature and latitude go together, and time and longitude go together. This upcoming week, students will be making papier mache globes.
Fourth grade social studies started learning about multiculturalism in Taiwan starting with the aboriginal groups in Taiwan. They have just started where the Taiwanese aboriginals' ancestors came from and where they live right now. We also revisited Pingpu that we talked a little bit about last semester. At the end of the class last week, I let them hear a song performed completely in Amis called, "不要放棄 Aka pisawad," by the Amis singer 紓米恩. The song won the best original song at the Golden Horse Award last year and the students really seemed to like the song.
In the 5th grade, the students are learning about human borders. We are learning about natural and physical borders. We are looking at several examples of these borders around the world. Many students are asking great questions and really thinking about the impact of borders. We will continue looking at the differences between borders over the next several weeks. Eventually, students will get to make their own country and put in place their own borders.
The grade 6 started learning about oil. They learned why oil is so important to us and which countries are the top producers and the consumers of oil. They also learned the concept of renewable resource and non-renewable resource. We later moved on to explore the dynamics of different countries in the oil-producing region such as the Middle East. We explored why relationship between the oil-producing countries and the United States.

We have completed the basics of what they need to know to be able to identify and read words. Most children are showing a great understanding and making connections with other subjects.
Animals and plants was the topic for the week. Students were learning about the importance of the balance we have in nature and how each organism helps out the next one. They also learned how to use time order words to write about their daily routines after school. The fifth and sixth graders have started working on their first projects and they will be giving updates on their progress in class. We have also started learning the fundamentals of building countries in the new chapter with the sixth graders. They are getting a chance to read about the origins of some countries and some other interesting trivia. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina In first and second grade art, we talked about shapes and patterns. Over the last couple of weeks the third graders have been learning about various geometric shapes and how the artist Auguste Herbin uses them in his artwork. They created their own abstract geometric pieces inspired by Herbin. The fourth graders reviewed the geometric shapes they had previously learned and were introduced to organic shapes. They were asked to use these shapes to create a piece of art inspired by the abstract works of Wassily Kandinsky. The fifth graders were introduced to the artist Edvard Munch and focused on his piece 'The Scream.' The students analyzed the work and created their own version including a reason for why the figure is screaming. The sixth graders have started doing research on an artist of their choosing. They will eventually present on and create a piece of art inspired by the artist.
