Grade 1 and 2 The First Graders had learned Unit 3: Making Toys and vocabulary of crafts. The students spent quality time reading aloud with their parents after school. And of course, last week was Christmas! We sang and danced. Everyone had a wonderful time. The Second Graders were introduced to a new reading- Bud and His Dad. We did a play in class. The students had fun and made efforts putting the sentences into practice. Great job! Grade 3 This week we started learning about some of the different things people like in Unit 3. Children had to talk about the things they like including hobbies, favorite foods, movies, and class subjects. It was fun to hear some of the similarities and differences with each student that spoke. Antonyms and synonyms were also a talking point for the week and we got the chance to practice throughout the lessons. Children also learned how to use pronouns and below are some of their writings. Grade 4 For this week, children got the chance to learn about facts and opinions from the previous reading. They were tasked with picking out which things were facts or opinions during a practice exercise. Most students were able to differentiate the two with no problem. We also began Unit 3 which is an introduction to animal habitats and environments. This topic made a great connection to their science class. Most students were able to use some of the knowledge learned in science to answer some questions asked about animals. Students also had the chance to make thier first journal entry using past tense. Grade 5 “Powerful Forces of Nature” was the topic for the week and we got a chance to go back into history. The reading for the unit was the story of Pompeii. Students learned about some of the devastating effects Mother Nature can have on us if we are unprepared. Since it is the first reading of the chapter, we are still introducing some basic vocabulary and reading about kids stories from around the world. Grade 6
Different people live in different houses and what may seem strange to you, is a home to someone else. These were some of the talking points for the week, “Where we live.” We read about the underground city of Australia and the different kinds of houses all over the world. We made reference to Taiwan and how housing is different compared to other parts of the world. 中年級朗讀比賽:

They have been learning about the importance of nutrients and habitats of living things such as plants, animals, and people. Here are a few of the kids outlining the anatomy of a flower where they learned that a flower’s roots are its mouth and, also, legs! Grade 2 Ontario and Huron have entered the magical world of life science. In it, they are learning to classify living things based on their characteristics such as habitat, color, size, feeding habits, and reproductive abilities. Each day, they are becoming more and more familiar with the life cycle of living things. Here is Nick demonstrating his understanding and imitation of an egg hatching. Grade 3 Students in grade 3 have been doing some research through www.kiddle.co about three animals from many different habitats. They took notes then put together a presentation on Google Slides. In this video, you can watch Neil’s presentation. We have also started on food chains, and students made one about grass, cricket, lizard, and hawk Grade 4 In grade 4, we have been learning about food chains and how producers, consumers, and decomposers pass the energy in ecosystems. Ocean, Rose, Nydia, and Michelle share their food chain in this video. Grade 5 Lochness and Lomond have taken experiments to a new level! They are learning all about the scientific method of asking questions and finding the answers. Discovering what it takes to get to the truth, the Er Xin scientists see the importance of the process as it unfolds. Here are several students with their own egg drop design experiment that helped guide them to a better understanding of how scientists operate. Grade 6
In grade 6, students have been putting together a Google Slides presentation with their groups on how people change the environment. There are groups talking about air pollution, land pollution, water pollution, logging, and people introducing nonnative species to ecosystems. They found many images and some videos that they will use to talk about their topics next week. Grade one The past week we have been reviewing chapter two by means of summative worksheets. Students used the vocabulary to complete sentences and provide matching pictures for each. They were to logically sequence the process whereby needs and wants are met. Students had fun expressing their understanding and presenting their knowledge through drawings. Furthermore chapter 3 was introduced which by means of an interactive game. Students were broken up into groups and had to match the words to the related pictures. Grade two The past week we worked through spending and saving money. The importance of saving was emphasized and students created graphs to show how money can be saved over a number of weeks. Students enjoyed creating graphs and these graphs were used as conversational pieces whereby students were to practice using the vocabulary and understanding the importance of saving. We then covered different jobs people do, at home, at school and in our communities. Furthermore we reviewed the chapter by means of the chapter assessment. Grade three This week we made our own landform dictionary. The children got to learn a little bit more about landforms in Taiwan. We did research on the types of landforms found in Taiwan. It was great fun for the children as it felt like we were going on a trip around the island. To reinforce the lesson, we learned two songs about landforms. Let's watch our show below. Grade four They finished their poster about the Hepingdao archaeological site. The posters reflect on what the students have learned so far this semester and they have demonstrated a very good understanding of their knowledge by drawing out everything that they had observed on the day of the fieldtrip. One particular poster that is very extraordinary because of the fact that the students chose to draw it as from the birds' eye point of view with 3D effects. Another interesting one is the one with students drawing the Spanish archaeologist imagining how the excavation will turn out. Grade five The past week we have been looking into the European Crisis which branched out into the Syrian Refugee Crisis. We started off with introductory video content provided by YouTube which highlighted the similarities between The Vietnamese Boat People and the Syrian Refugees. We also looked into the cause of this crisis in terms of the political and terrorist factions causing the heartache of civilians and the destruction around them. Students were interested in what the rest of the world was doing to assist the Syrian Refugees. Due to this we had a look at what was being done to assist these people and also the impact it has on the lives of children. This topic was an eye opener to all the students and proved to be a good topic for conversation. They were also able to make direct comparisons to The Terminal, a movie which we covered previously. Grade six
The students finished their little mid-semester project. The project was to draw how Taiwanese used to live 80 years ago. The project is a simplification of last year's project so students had a more concrete direction to follow. The students most focused on Japanese houses. One group chose to draw the old Keelung Station to illustrate the point that Keelung was a bustling city even that long ago. These few weeks, the first grade have been doing the Mondrian project. First of all, the students had to know what the elements of art are and then they could figure out what elements were used in Mondrian’s style paintings. They have got a basic idea of how to make pieces like this artist. They created a grid with vertical lines and horizontal lines. After, they filled it in with a few colors like red, yellow, blue and black. At the end of the project, we made Mondrian style animals by trying to add the design to the animal drawings. It was fantastic! it. Even though Van Gogh’s stories are a little bit strange and scary, the second graders really love this artist and his artwork. First, we did a pre-study before starting the big one. In the pre-study, we knew that he was very poor but he dedicated himself a lot to art. Then we started to talk about his lifetime and the development of his art style based on his artistic works in different periods. When I told them the ear story, they were shocked but after they realized he had an argument with his best friend and that he had mental issues, it helped them understand how he felt back then. We focused on one of his masterpieces called “Starry Night” and tried recreating the dramatic night sky with swirls, a crescent moon and shining stars. This week we have been wrapping up the projects we have been working on. Third Graders finished their Renoir Umbrellas and really worked hard on blending colors and using value just as Pierre-Auguste Renoir.Fourth Graders finished their City/Landscape pictures and created colorful captions of the city and country life just as Justin Vining does. Fifth Graders finished drawing their Hand Henna Tattoo project and carefully created delicate lines just as Bharathi Sanghani does. Sixth Graders have been finishing their Abstract Creation project and creatively captured the color liveliness of Romero Britto.
501班 薛宇棠同學 榮獲朗讀比賽國小組甲組特優(第一名)-感謝簡宇芃老師指導。 601班 郭蓁臻同學 榮獲說故事比賽國小組甲組優等(第五名)-感謝蔡子儀老師指導。 For the past few weeks, the first graders have learned about people at school and some good habits to keep themselves healthy. They also learned numbers from 1 to 30. Most students read to their parents and practiced the vocabulary they've learned after class. They have made significant progress. The second graders learned a story about a dog named "Tip" who moved from a city to a country. He feels sad that he has to leave his old friend, but he also feels happy that he has some new pals. We practiced pronouns and be verbs in present tense. Most of the students did some reading and questions and answers with their parents after class. I'd like to see this become a daily parent-child quality time routine. More Reading and More Writing!Third Grade Thanksgiving was the theme of the week and we had fun making up a silly turkey story. Children were each given a chance to complete a story about a turkey that did not want to be dinner. They had to use their imagination to create a fun depiction of what happened to the turkey after. A lot of the children came up with some really interesting stories, like the one pictured below by Eudora. Fourth Grade The fourth graders also had chance to have some Thanksgiving fun by creating an advertisement. They had to pretend to be a turkey trying to convince the world why they shouldn’t be chosen to be the Thanksgiving turkey. It was a fun way for the children to tap into their creativity. We also learned about possessive pronouns and nouns in an effort to improve their daily language. Using correct grammar is a goal we are trying to reach and hopefully, we will achieve it in time. Fifth Grade The fifth grade students were learning how to read a selection and pick out important details. We utilized a details chart and everyone had to find important information relating to the text given. Afterwards, the students had to present their findings to the rest of the class. Sixth grade
Adverbs were the main talking point for the week. We discussed usage and differences between adverbs of frequency and intensity. Children had the chance to practice by answering questions about their daily life using adverbs. We also learned about cause and effect after reading a selection from our text book. More connections were made by using Taiwan as an example. It was topic that a lot of the students enjoyed and had a lot to say about their community. |
