In grade 1 science class, we talked about what objects are and we learned about the five senses. To reinforce these two concepts, we did an activity where they had to close their eyes, reach in a bag for 20 seconds, remember what they felt, then draw a picture of the objects they felt. They learned how to "see" with another sense: touch. For the grade 2 science classes, we talked about the earthquakes that happened in Kumamoto, Japan. We talked about the destructive power of mother nature and what kind of damage that earthquakes could do. We watched some clips of the 2004 and the 2011 tsunami. I had also informed them that in 1867, Keelung was hit by a tsunami before so we cannot forget history! We also talked more about soil and their characteristics. We learned that there are many different kinds of soil, each with their own properties. In third grade, we finished up our discussion of energy before the midterm. So last week we began our final chapter on movement. The students did an experiment with their favorite toys, looking at the toys and figuring out all the different ways different toys can be moved. Push, pull, turn on, remote control, etc.... In the fourth and fifth grades, we continued writing our reports and working on our powerpoint presentations. The students will finish up the final draft of their reports soon and then start presenting their experiments to their class just like real scientists! The grade 6 science was cut short because half of the class needed to participate their science fair project that week. Under time constraint, we finished chapter 7's last lesson. We learned the differences between physical change and chemical change. For the chemical change, I demonstrated simple experiments by using Coca-cola with Mentos and vinegar with baking soda.
-Science Teachers Katrina, Steven, and Erisa In first grade social studies class, we are just beginning a unit on culture. We talked about what culture us, and how they differ from country to country. We saw what different countries around the world eat for breakfast, and how it can be very different from country to country. The students is the 2nd grade are learning about land and water. We discussed the different types of land (mountains, hills, deserts), and the different types of water (lakes, rivers, oceans). Now, we are discussing the continents and oceans of the world. The students are learning about the continent they live in, Asia, and the oceans around Asia, the Pacific, the Indian, and the Arctic Ocean. The students in the 3rd grade continued to review the continents and oceans of the world. They are also practicing using longitude and latitude to find places on a map. The students are showing a lot of progress in this area and they work well together to find each coordinate given. During the previous week of class, we did a hands on activity. The students created papier-mâché globes. The globes now hang in the classroom to be used as a helpful resource to all students. In grade 4 social studies class, we corrected our midterm test to see where we got wrong. We finished the week by learning the final part of the lesson on Paiwan/Rukai. We learned the body/hand tattoo culture of the two groups. We learned whey they tattooed themselves and why not everyone could get those tattoo.
The students in the 5th grade continue to discuss the benefits and consequences of human borders. This week, we are discussing what makes a country a country. The students will learn a few of the rules that humans created to determine what is or what is not a country. We will apply these rules to Taiwan and its part in the global community. Some of the 5th grade students are presenting interesting ideas about what makes a country a country. The grade 6 social studies class was unfortunately cut short because of the midterm test. I did a little introduction on the lesson of France with them. We watched a video about Paris and we looked at some of the pictures of France. This week first graders were learning about different facial features. Also they were practicing how to add facial expression when they were drawing the faces. Grade two students were learning about how to make paper quilling flowers. They knew basic skills of making the rolls and they could get the desired shapes by pinching them. Last week in art, the 3rd grade was introduced to the element of form. They learned how to change geometrical shapes into geometrical forms and how to add value to make said forms 3D. They were then introduced to natural forms and learned all about the artwork of Dale Chihuly. Chihuly's glass bowls were the inspiration for the third grade's art project. Grade four reviewed geometrical and natural forms. For their art project they were given a piece of porcelain that they had discovered during their excavation in social studies. They were asked to create a drawing of what the porcelain might look like if it was intact. They were then given porcelain dough and were asked to create their own bowl, jug, or plate. Grade five has been looking at the fantastic jungles of Henri Rousseau. They have analyzed and taken inspiration from 'Tiger in a Tropical Storm.' They have started creating the many layers and pieces that will help create their jungle pictures. The grade six students have been working hard to find information for their art research projects. They have chosen an artist, created a timeline, found quotes and interesting facts, chosen a piece of art to analyze and are discussing ways in which they can take inspiration from their artist to create their own piece of art.
