Grade 1 Last week, we introduced job occupations song for 1st grade. By humming a melody, students could remember the words in mind easily. We also did role-playing when discussing the leaders in our community. It seemed hospital and school role-playing fascinated kids the most. They enjoyed acting as doctors, nurses, and teachers very much. Grade 2 In the grade 2 classes, we have learned the difference between a map and a globe, directions, and parts of a map. We have created our own maps and wrote about where things such as Pokémon, the spider, the school and the park are. We are now learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans. We’ve made our own world map puzzle; as well as, found all the names of the continents and oceans in a challenging word search! Great job, grade 2’s!! In Teacher Katie’s class This semester, we extend the story “Jack and Beanstalk” by fun science experience and math activities. Growing the seeds helps the student to develop an understanding of how plants grow by recording their observation and drawing. This week, we also created a mini market to learn using money wisely. In the lesson, the students should identify the grocery categories and organize items on their own and act as either shop owners or customers with proper manners. Grade 3 The Grade 3 students have been enjoying learning about various landforms in our world, such as archipelagos, canyons, plains, and valleys. They have made their own landforms book which turned out beautifully, and very colorful too (see photos). Also, students have studied their vocabulary by making their own word search and challenging a friend to find the answers. Finally, the landforms bingo game (where they wrote and drew their own pictures of each landform) was a lot of fun, with many students yelling “BINGO!” Grade 4 In the past few weeks, we have been talking about the geographical features in Taiwan. By drawing the picture or self-organized map on the communication book helped reinforce students’ memory of what they have learned in class. Also, in order to strengthen student’s concept of five different types of landforms in Taiwan, we tried to shape the landforms by using the pipe cleaners. ‘Learning by doing’ would always get the student involved easily. Grade 5 We have been learning about the first peoples’ migration to the Americas. How did they get there? Where did they come from? Why did they go there? What was the environment like over 10,000 years ago when they arrived in North America? What evidence have scientists found to support their theories? These are some of the questions we have been asking and answering in our grade 5 classes. Grade 6 There are many unique cultures and fun history about Egypt. Students were interested in learning Egyptian art, makeup, mummification process, and ancient objects in the Pyramids. We also demonstrated some online interactive activities in class. Hopefully, these resources would motivate students to review the lessons at home. Grade 1 We have talked about how to name art supplies in English and how we use them in art class over the past few weeks. The target vocabulary in this project will be used over and over again in the following year. This week, we started learning color words. Students will have a nature walk and observe the colors in nature. At the end of the project, they’ll create their own landscape paintings with the desired colors. Grade 2 We learned about shapes and lines, students created a variety of different art using these new concepts. Grade 3 We focused on symmetry and composition and students created abstract symmetrical drawings in many shapes and colors. Grade 4 Students learned about the basics of art. They knew how to read the information of artwork and how to label artwork with its title, creator, medium and size. When talking about medium, they did an experiment by mixing paints with egg yolk and glue to create different kinds of tempera paints. After this project, they began to learn shadows and lights in art. To make art more realistic, they should know how to shade the objects in drawings and paintings. Grade 5 We continued learning about color and used oil pastels and paint to make feathers, students then worked in groups to create beautiful large collages of wings. Grade 6 We continued learning about different ways to create animation, students made paper cutouts of backgrounds, like cities and mountains, and birds. We also started using our software to make simple bird animations showing birds flying across a landscape. Mixing colors with egg yolksGrade 1 So far, we have been working on improving the handwriting skills of the students. Most students are able to write well and have no problems doing most of the work. We have also been working on the correct form of the letters in the alphabet. In addition to their handwriting, we have been tackling the 42 letter sounds beginning with group 1 s, t, a, n, i, p. Utilizing their Jolly Phonics Workbook, we focused on learning the sounds and not the letter names. This helps them to develop their spelling skills earlier and faster. We also did some activities ranging from blending sounds, songs and writing to reinforce the concept. Hopefully, by the end of the semester, students will be able to spell basic words and tricky words and also read some beginner texts. Grade 2 Students have learned that in Reading 1 Sam first arrived in a new school. She feels sacred and new to everything. We are also learning simple present tense be verbs. The students enjoy reading the story to their parents. Grade 3 We have been talking about families for this first half of the semester. The students learned how families do things together and how they help each other. They also shared personal experiences with each other that included some of the things they do with their family. To reinforce these ideas we read some selections and had some writing activities we utilized to bring more understanding. Overall, most students have done well thus far. Grade 4 Students have learned that in Reading 1 how Hector interacts with people in his community. Most students did well on spelling quiz, and they are getting started reading the story to their parents, too. As we do more practice, you will surely gain more confidence in English! Grade 5 We started the semester with discussing the relationship between animals and people. The students learned the importance of taking care of animals and why it’s vital for adults to take care of their young. Students got a chance to write about and read stories related to the topic in order to get a better understanding. Hopefully, at the end of the year, we can apply all that knowledge in their final projects. Grade 6 Problem-solving has been the topic thus far. We defined what a problem is and delved into the topic using many different examples of real-life problems and how to solve them. Students enjoyed talking about how they have found their own solutions to problems or how other people have helped them. Hopefully, at the end of the year, we can apply all that knowledge in their final projects. They have also learned how to apply some of what they have learned in STEAM class during a variety of activities.
