Grade 1 So far, we have been working on improving the handwriting skills of the students. Most students are able to write well and have no problems doing most of the work. We have also been working on the correct form of the letters in the alphabet. In addition to their handwriting, we have been tackling the 42 letter sounds beginning with group 1 s, t, a, n, i, p. Utilizing their Jolly Phonics Workbook, we focused on learning the sounds and not the letter names. This helps them to develop their spelling skills earlier and faster. We also did some activities ranging from blending sounds, songs and writing to reinforce the concept. Hopefully, by the end of the semester, students will be able to spell basic words and tricky words and also read some beginner texts. Grade 2 Students have learned that in Reading 1 Sam first arrived in a new school. She feels sacred and new to everything. We are also learning simple present tense be verbs. The students enjoy reading the story to their parents. Grade 3 We have been talking about families for this first half of the semester. The students learned how families do things together and how they help each other. They also shared personal experiences with each other that included some of the things they do with their family. To reinforce these ideas we read some selections and had some writing activities we utilized to bring more understanding. Overall, most students have done well thus far. Grade 4 Students have learned that in Reading 1 how Hector interacts with people in his community. Most students did well on spelling quiz, and they are getting started reading the story to their parents, too. As we do more practice, you will surely gain more confidence in English! Grade 5 We started the semester with discussing the relationship between animals and people. The students learned the importance of taking care of animals and why it’s vital for adults to take care of their young. Students got a chance to write about and read stories related to the topic in order to get a better understanding. Hopefully, at the end of the year, we can apply all that knowledge in their final projects. Grade 6 Problem-solving has been the topic thus far. We defined what a problem is and delved into the topic using many different examples of real-life problems and how to solve them. Students enjoyed talking about how they have found their own solutions to problems or how other people have helped them. Hopefully, at the end of the year, we can apply all that knowledge in their final projects. They have also learned how to apply some of what they have learned in STEAM class during a variety of activities.
