In first grade, we explored living and non-living things! We watched the Sesame Street video to help us learn this concept. In grade 2 science, we finished up the vertebrates and the invertebrates lesson. The kids learned the major groups of animals and how they are different from each other. I showed them real backbones and a pig jaw from a fish by using grade 4 social studies archaeology materials. In the following class, we had a review class where we played games. We played charade and jeopardy so the kids could get more involved and be challenged with more difficult questions that they might see on the upcoming exam. In third grade, we took a quiz on matter (solids, liquids, and gases), and began reviewing for our science final next week. In fourth grade, we took a quiz on weather and began reviewing for our science final next week. The fourth graders were particularly fast workers, so on Christmas we watched The Nutcracker, a classic Christmas ballet. In fifth grade, we continued talking about the forces that change and shape Earth, particularly weathering, erosion, and deposition. We talked about how the Queen's Head Rock at Yehliu Geological Park is an excellent example of weathering and erosion happening where we live!
We finished the astronomy part of the textbook for grade 6. We finished reading about our solar system and the eight planets. We talked about each planets and saw pictures of those planets taken by our space probes. The grade 6 should now have a fundamental idea of what our solar system and our own earth is like by the end of the class. In 1st grade, we learned about communities and maps. Since it's the holiday season, we learned about post offices and mailing cards. The students made Christmas cards to "mail" to their families. In the 2nd grade, the students have finished their “Work in the Community” lessons for the semester. We will be reviewing the topics we have discussed over the next two weeks. So far, the students have learned about needs and wants; making choices; goods and services; buying and selling; and spending and saving. Hopefully, the students are starting to understand the differences between what they need and what they want. Also, they should understand the importance earning money for their services and saving it. In the 3rd grade, the students have been working on making tourism boards. The students are working in groups of the threes or fours. Each group has several tasks they must complete each day or week. The end result should be a poster board that helps people understand Keelung’s history and the important places to visit while in Keelung. This has been a great test to see how well students cooperate in group scenarios, and how they divvy up the group work. I have seen some great group work and leadership come from this project. In grade 4 social studies, we talked a Taiwanese archaeological site called, Hanben (漢本). We talked about how the construction of a new highway will destroy this site and positive and negative things about the highway. I also shared with them the experience that I had when I went to the site not too long ago. When proceeded to move on to work on their project which is to use what they have done in the excavation activities and to come up with ideas for a story. The 5th graders started this semester’s final project last month. Since we have been discussing migration and immigration this semester, the students found and interviewed an immigrant. Most the students found someone on their own, while others interviewed some of the staff. The students are writing up an essay about their person, Each student will create a poster, PowerPoint, or other creative piece to express their person’s journey from one land to another. It has been exciting to see the process of their writings, as well as to read about all the interesting people out there. The final product should be excellent! In grade 6 social studies, we spent one class on researching on their project and another class in making the project. Two groups are going to act out their project so their project has a lot more writing that other two groups. The other two groups are making a map and a 3D model so their projects lean more towards artistic presentations and so far, they look great. |
