In the book "Library Lion," we discussed the rules when visiting the library and in "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat," we talked about the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The 2nd graders are reviewing for their midterm next week. We have been discussing rules and laws. We discussed the difference between classroom and home rules versus community laws. The students are well aware of what they should do in their community to keep it safe. I’m hoping the things they learn in school transcend the classroom and help them become a good citizen in their communities. I have seen many students showing good citizenship in school in many different ways. The 3rd graders are reviewing for their midterms next week. Students are reviewing the places in their communities, and what you can do there and who works there. Students are showing a good understanding of the differences between the places in their world. All students should be able to tell you what’s in their community; what district they live; what city they live in; and the country, continent, and world they are live in. In grade 4 Social Studies, we talked about the quiz that we did the week before. The students were able to understand the subject more after they had shared their own answers with others. I had brought in a real pottery for them to see. They all seemed very curious when I showed it to them. Student asked some very good questions about the pottery, many of the questions were the concepts that we have talked about in the last month or so. We also did a review in preparation for the midterm. The 5th graders are also reviewing for their midterm tests. Our class has been reviewing human migrations from centuries ago (The Irish Potato Famine: 1845-49), from decades ago (The Vietnamese “Boat People”:1978-79), and current migrations (The Syrian Refugee Crisis: 2011-present). Students have been discussing the causes of these migrations, and their effects on the world. We will continue to discuss these issues and look at current global trends for migration. In grade 6 Social Studies, we also talked about the quiz that did the week before. The average mark for this quiz was higher than the first quiz from earlier this semester, so the grade 6 definitely are showing signs of improvement. We spend two classes on reviews so they would refresh their memory and get an ideal marks on the upcoming midterm.
Students in grade 1 and 2 studied the composition of landscape painting. We focused on the concepts of background, middle ground and foreground. They looked at Possuin’s Landscape with a Calm and described what they could see in the painting. They were instructed how to separate the painting into three sections and made a model of it. I made the copies on three different colors of paper. They were asked to cut out two of the template along the dotted line. They glued the three sections together. They referred to the painting to see what parts should go in what order. They were informed that three sections are called background, foreground and middle ground and discussed the questions like “What can you see in the background/ middle ground/ foreground?” Next week we will talk about the concepts of overlapping and relative size. And then they are going to create their own landscapes using principles of composition. After learning about various color schemes the third graders observed how an artist could use color to enhance their artwork. They looked at the colorful abstract works of Ted Harrison. The Third graders used Harrison’s art to inspire their own creations using ripped paper to create a colorful landscape collage. Grade four was introduced to the works of Loretta Grayson. Their art project was all about discovering new colors. They were asked to use warm and cool color schemes, as well as complimentary colors. The students were encouraged to mix their paints to see what colors they could create. The fifth and sixth grade students learned how math could be incorporated into art when they were asked to enlarge a photo of themselves. Students were taught how to use the grid method to help them improve their drawing and observational skills. The fifth graders are working on a self-portrait inspired by the works of Chuck Close and the sixth graders took inspiration from the artist Roy Lichtenstein.
Best, Teachers Moguli and Alycia This week the first graders learnt about hygiene and healthy habits. The children had a chance to talk about what their daily healthy habit was and why it is important. They also learnt some new phonics sounds. In addition, they were introduced to some new vocabulary to go with the phonics. With the second graders we continued with “Changes”. We were able to complete the first unit and the children finally put all they had learnt together in our writing workshop. They had to write about their friend and talk about their classroom using our “Write and Draw” activity sheet. Watch one student's recording on their writing here. In third and fourth grade, we had vocabulary quizzes. On the other hand, in order to improve student's speaking skills, we also focused more on individual read aloud, questions and answers practice, phonics practice etc. Watch two grade 3 students do a dialogue here. Students are asked to read their readings to their parents and share the stories with them. This can be a good chance for parents to spend some quality time with their children and know how well they're progressing, too. The fifth and sixth graders have started working on some essays and are learning the importance of writing well to become better writers. We have been reading a lot from their textbooks and assessing them through their workbooks. Most of them are very comfortable now. The sixth graders were also able to make dialogue videos for their class assignment which was a fun experience to watch. You can watch one here. Overall, the students have done well thus far and we hope to continue on with this momentum. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina |
