In grade 1, through the use of a couple of children's story books, we discussed how the main character in each book was being a good citizen. In the book "Library Lion," we discussed the rules when visiting the library and in "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat," we talked about the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The 2nd graders are reviewing for their midterm next week. We have been discussing rules and laws. We discussed the difference between classroom and home rules versus community laws. The students are well aware of what they should do in their community to keep it safe. I’m hoping the things they learn in school transcend the classroom and help them become a good citizen in their communities. I have seen many students showing good citizenship in school in many different ways. The 3rd graders are reviewing for their midterms next week. Students are reviewing the places in their communities, and what you can do there and who works there. Students are showing a good understanding of the differences between the places in their world. All students should be able to tell you what’s in their community; what district they live; what city they live in; and the country, continent, and world they are live in. In grade 4 Social Studies, we talked about the quiz that we did the week before. The students were able to understand the subject more after they had shared their own answers with others. I had brought in a real pottery for them to see. They all seemed very curious when I showed it to them. Student asked some very good questions about the pottery, many of the questions were the concepts that we have talked about in the last month or so. We also did a review in preparation for the midterm. The 5th graders are also reviewing for their midterm tests. Our class has been reviewing human migrations from centuries ago (The Irish Potato Famine: 1845-49), from decades ago (The Vietnamese “Boat People”:1978-79), and current migrations (The Syrian Refugee Crisis: 2011-present). Students have been discussing the causes of these migrations, and their effects on the world. We will continue to discuss these issues and look at current global trends for migration. In grade 6 Social Studies, we also talked about the quiz that did the week before. The average mark for this quiz was higher than the first quiz from earlier this semester, so the grade 6 definitely are showing signs of improvement. We spend two classes on reviews so they would refresh their memory and get an ideal marks on the upcoming midterm.
