There was a question students should think about before they learned. If they only have three colors red, yellow and blue, how can they get other colors without buying more paints? So, we did a mixing color experiment in class. Students could see how to get colors mixed and what colors would be made. We started with primary colors – red, yellow and blue. The student was mixing red and yellow to make orange. After the experiment, they got secondary colors - orange, green and purple. We also talked about that colors have temperature, they can be warm or cool. Warm and cool colors can also show feelings. Like warm is for happy and cool is for sad. They were painting and trying to get more colors by mixing. Warm as a happy face, cool as a sad face The goal of this exercise is for students to learn about the concept and use of warm and cool colors in a watercolor painting of their own. They painted the happy face the half of art in warm colors and the sad face half in cool colors. Throughout the year the third and fourth grade students will learn all about the 7 elements of art. This week we are looking at the element of color. The third graders were able to recall warm and cool color schemes and identify primary and secondary colors. They learned why primary colors are important and how to make tertiary colors. The fourth grade students discussed complimentary colors and how to make an analogous color scheme. The exploration of color will lead the students into next week’s art projects where they will look at how an artist uses color in their artwork. The students will take inspiration from the artwork to create their own. This week the theme in the fifth and sixth grade art class was self-portraits. Grade five discussed the abstract works of Chuck Close while the sixth graders looked at pop art created by Roy Lichtenstein. The students will create their own self-portraits using the techniques used by the artists. HERE IS TO A GREAT SECOND WEEK! We kicked of the second week of school at a wonderful pace. The children were very excited and ready for their classes as usual. The first graders began the week continuing to learn about the different people in school. They were able to talk about their favorite person from school and all the fun things they like do at school. We moved on to phonics and learnt four different sounds. Later, the children practiced in their workbooks and were able to display what they had learnt for the week. The second graders got a chance to write about themselves in our “All about me” activity. We asked the kids to draw themselves and write a few characteristics about who they are. To end the week, we had a fun reading activity. We read a big book called “Dear Zoo”. The children really loved the story and got a chance to write their own letter to the zoo and ask for their own animal. With third and fourth graders, we did some group reading, individual reading and some paired questions & answers using cornerstone. The students really enjoyed it and gained satisfaction and confidence through activities like this.
Fifth and sixth graders have settled in very well and most are adjusting to their new classes. We will be posting more of their progress in due course as we had not started anything major. At the moment we are learning about helping people in the community and why it is important to so. The six graders have done well and have shown great understanding on the topic. As for the fifth graders, they are learning about the importance of animals and why we should take care of them. It was a very exciting week and we hope the next weeks will get better and better. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina Weekly Update 2015-09-07 - Focused on Science Last week was our first week of school, and it was great seeing everyone’s happy faces again. In the science classes, we reviewed some important science vocabulary. We will use tools like rulers and scales, and measurements like weight and length all year long, so it’s important we start the year off reaffirming these concepts. The second graders did a nice little activity about observations, while the fourth graders began an activity on measurement and tools. The first graders commenced their science class with a discussion of the word “experiment” through “sink or float” video. This coming week, the sixth graders will start learning more about Earth science, while the younger grades will continue to review the scientific method. Go Er-Xin! Teachers Erisa and Steven |
