This week, the 2nd Graders learned about needs and wants. We looked at several different examples of what a need is and how it is different from a want. We also discussed how we pay for things. Students know we use money in the form of bills and coins. I brought in some money from around the world to allow the students to see what bills and coins look like in other countries. The 3rd Graders finished making their 2D / 3D communities. Each student needed to create a model of their real community or one they would like to live in. The model needed to include important places in the neighborhood. It also needed to be labeled, so people who see it understand what each building or place is. We started our write-up on their communities. Each student needs to do a short write-up about their community. We are working in the computer lab, so the students are getting a chance to sharpen their computer writing skills. In grade 4 Social Studies class, we were learning about ancient civilizations; Egypt and Rome. We looked at some of the most famous works done by the Egyptians like the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. We also learned about some of the traditions of the Egyptians like why they wanted to turn dead bodies into mummies. We learned about why Rome was so important to us and looked at their famous works like the aqueducts and the Colosseum in Rome.
The 5th Graders were looking a data tables and graphs this week. The students had to use the internet and their researching skills to answer questions on a worksheet. The students were looking at the immigration of people into Taiwan and the migration of people from Taiwan. We looked at who is coming to Taiwan, and where are Taiwanese moving to. Students also made line graphs to show the increase in Taiwan’s population and the decrease in its birthrate. Students had to use the information and make an inference about what the graphs meant. The grade 6 were learning about the history of the railroads in Taiwan. We took a look at some of the most famous train stations in Taiwan. We also looked at the old and beautiful Keelung Station that the Japanese people built more than 100 years ago. We also did a small assignment of what students would ask a Japanese if they had the chance but what they do not know is that their questions WILL be answered by a real Japanese. We also talked about some current event such as the terrible bombing incident in Paris not long ago and the many causes of that incident. 中年級組:

We talked about their backgrounds, lifetime and interesting facts. For grade 1, we focused on the way that Seurat painted, which is called “pointillism.” Students tried mixing colors with dots just like Seurat. For grade 2, we focused on Van Gogh’s famous paintings like The Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night and Van Gogh’s self portraits. We compared the colors used in his early paintings and late paintings. Next week they will recreate Starry Night using glue and oil pastels. Grade 3 was introduced to a new element of art; value. They discussed how value shows the range of colors from dark to light, that dark colors are called shades and the light colors are tints. Using this knowledge the third graders then examined the delicious artwork of Wayne Thiebaud. They discussed how the artist uses shades to create shadows and tints to create light. Next week grade 3 will begin making their own scrumptious works of art and learn how to use value to make their work more realistic. The fourth graders were able recall and discuss the element of value. This year they are learning how an artist can use tints and shades to create night and day, and turn 2D shapes into 3D forms. They were introduced to the abstract artwork created by Justin Vining. Grade four will use Vining’s style to create their own abstract landscapes and incorporate value throughout their artwork. The fifth and sixth graders put in the final touches to complete their self portraits inspired by Chuck Close and Roy Lichtenstien.
