This week grade 1 and grade 2 were studying two artists respectively – Georges Seurat and Vincent van Gogh. We talked about their backgrounds, lifetime and interesting facts. For grade 1, we focused on the way that Seurat painted, which is called “pointillism.” Students tried mixing colors with dots just like Seurat. For grade 2, we focused on Van Gogh’s famous paintings like The Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night and Van Gogh’s self portraits. We compared the colors used in his early paintings and late paintings. Next week they will recreate Starry Night using glue and oil pastels. Grade 3 was introduced to a new element of art; value. They discussed how value shows the range of colors from dark to light, that dark colors are called shades and the light colors are tints. Using this knowledge the third graders then examined the delicious artwork of Wayne Thiebaud. They discussed how the artist uses shades to create shadows and tints to create light. Next week grade 3 will begin making their own scrumptious works of art and learn how to use value to make their work more realistic. The fourth graders were able recall and discuss the element of value. This year they are learning how an artist can use tints and shades to create night and day, and turn 2D shapes into 3D forms. They were introduced to the abstract artwork created by Justin Vining. Grade four will use Vining’s style to create their own abstract landscapes and incorporate value throughout their artwork. The fifth and sixth graders put in the final touches to complete their self portraits inspired by Chuck Close and Roy Lichtenstien.
