Getting to know you We spent a lot of time this week getting to know each other and our responsibilities in the classroom. We are really looking forward to a productive year in the Science Classes. Grade 1 We focused on learning about living things and nonliving things. Living things can grow. They can move on their own. They can reproduce. Nonliving things cannot. We had a scavenger hunt to find living and nonliving things around the Audio classroom. We also compared and contrasted different animals. Scientists love to classify things into groups! Grade 2 We started out year by comparing and contrasting different animals and parts of their bodies. We did a lot of cut and paste activities to match animals to their body parts. We all got “secret” animal flashcards and had to find our “mother”, “father”, or “baby” depending on your secret card. The animal foot match was a lot of fun! Grade 3 In Grade 301, we started off the school year learning about the properties of matter. We observed the physical properties of matter with our five senses: see, hear, taste, touch, and feel. We also learned about how to describe matter using weight and temperature. After learning some useful adjectives, we applied what we learned to an exercise. It was the first time students got to use a measuring scale. Students had to first hypothesize which object was HEAVIER, which object was LIGHTER. Afterwards, we worked in groups to check our answers. Grade 4 This year we started off with the Roll It! Challenge. As we learn about force and motion, we are also learning about the Laws of Motion and what factors affect force and motion of an object. Students were asked to create a ramp using limited supplies. We then used objects of different mass to see which would roll faster. We also changed the HEIGHT of the ramp to see if there would be any differences in SPEED. We will continue to explore force and end with a final project of building a roller coaster! Stay tuned! Grade 5 We started talking about adaptations necessary for survival in grade 5. We also began classifying animals based on many factors. Your children were given sets of 18 animals and had to decide the most appropriate way to group them into 2 groups, 3 groups, 4 groups, and even 5 groups! We also played a game where we grouped animals based on the biomes they live in. Grade 6 We already started our first experiment in grade 6! We are seeing how temperature affects seed growth. One set of red or green beans is hanging inside in the cool, refreshing air conditioning. The other is hanging in the window outside in the scorching sun. We predicted what will happen and will be checking back weekly to see how they grow. 賀一、基隆市多語文競賽
