It was all about the community for the first and second graders as we began to explore what a community is and what community helpers are.We made connections with their social studies classes as we discussed good citizenship in relation to community. The children were able to give some great responses and seemed to benefit a lot from our discussions in class. We also learnt about possessives with the second graders and they learned how to use them correctly in daily language. They also had a chance to practice in a writing activity. In third and fourth grade, we had vocabulary quizzes. On the other hand, in order to improve student's speaking skills, we also focused more on individual read aloud, questions and answers practice, phonics practice etc. Students are asked to read their readings to their parents and share the stories with them. This can be a good chance for parents to spend some quality time with their children and know how well they're progressing, too.
With the fifth graders, we began talking about powerful forces of nature and the world around us.Our discussions brought to light the different types of natural forces that affect us all over the world. Most students were able to respond very well with examples from Taiwan and other parts of the world. They also got a chance to see different forms of extreme weather from other parts of the world through videos we prepared for them. Community heroes was the topic for the 6th graders as we explored the meaning of a hero. The children responded well as we discussed heroes in the community and what they do and risk to help us.The students were very excited to start this unit and even more excited to start their first project for the semester. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina Because it's our midterm week, for grade 1, we reviewed the materials that were being tested in class. We played games to help us remember the words we need for the test. Last week for grade 2 science, we started growing some plants! Athena and Zeus each have their own plants and students will learn how to take care of the plants. Each week, students will observe the growth of the plants and record down their findings on a paper which they will hand in at the end of semester. During class, we discussed about the midterm test and students should have a full understanding of the materials that we have learned in the last two months. The students also started learning about environments about how different environments will have different animals. In grade 3, we took a much needed breaking from testing and watched some Magic School Bus! The kids love the educational cartoon and can review science concepts we learned in class. We watched the video where the Magic School Bus kids go through the water cycle and another episode where they kids learn about weather by going through a storm. It’s a good way for them to practice their English listening and reading (we watch with the English subtitles on). One grade 4 student made a cartoon about the solar system using things he's learned in science class! Way to go Max! In grade 4, we continued working on our planet project. In groups of three, students are practicing their computer and internet searching skills to find facts about a planet. Then, they use Google Drive to create powerpoints they can work on together. Google Drive’s capabilities allow the students to work on the SAME POWERPOINT at the SAME TIME. No need to share one computer! And no need to save to a USB! Google Drive autosaves the powerpoint that can be accessed on any computer. I promise this isn’t a paid advertisement for Google Drive, I’m just very happy with the wonderful work the students have been able to create because of the freedom and flexibility of our new program with Google Drive! The grade 6 science class was cut short due to midterm test but we managed to go through the midterm. We will be able to finish the chapter in the upcoming week and move on to a new chapter.
