Grade 1 continues to explore the topic of “Scientists”. We talked about how scientists think and the five senses that we need to use as a scientist. Click here to hear the 5 senses! Last week the Grade 2 students learned about technology. They learned technology has changed in the last few thousands years. They know technology will make better tools which will help us do work a lot easier. They also learned about natural and man-made things. They went out to the basketball court to take a better look at some of the natural and man-made things that we can see at our school. The students were able to properly identify natural things such as clouds and mountains that could be seen at school. They knew that cement and a basketball hoop are both man-made. Grades 3 and 4 took quizzes to assess their knowledge of measurement, science tools, and the scientific method. They showed their knowledge - not just vocabulary, but also their ability to use tools to measure things and make graphs. Skills real scientists use every day! Then Grades 3 and 4 started learning about their new topics. Grade 3 began learning about weather and Grade 4 began learning about the solar system. They made KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) charts in their science notebooks so they can track their progress throughout the chapter! In Grade 5, we continued reviewing the scientific method. Students learned how to take their heart rate and did an experiment where they had to do physical activities, take their heart rate, and make graphs. Next week they take their quiz on the scientific method to show what they know! The Grade 6 students finished up their science chapter on rocks. They were introduced to sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. I let them watch a short musical video about a very important theme of the chapter, the rock cycle! They had a lot of fun watching the video because it was done as the famous song, Let it Go. The students were asked to bring in some rocks so they could try to identify them. Not all of the students were able to identify the types of rocks they brought in but many were able to. Watch the video! -Your Science Teachers Welcome to Rotation 4! This week we will focus on the student’s progress in Social Studies. The 1st grade students have been reviewing the rules of school and the rules in 1st grade class. We discussed who the leaders are at school and talked about how to be a polite student and the words that we have to use when asking for something. Watch the students saying their favorite school/classroom rule here! The 2nd graders discussed what it means to be a good citizen. After giving many examples, the students created their own good citizen. Each student wrote at least three things that make them a good citizen. The students then designed their citizens however they liked; they were quite creative! The 3rd graders have been learning about where they live. We are starting small with our community and moving big with the Earth. They are using maps of Keelung City to find their districts and important landmarks in Keelung. Students are creating a paper that shows where they are in the world. It will be interesting to see what is important to them in their communities and in their country. For 4th grade social studies, we started the archaeology unit. It was the introduction to archaeology and we will continue to study archaeology in the next while. Students learned the basics of archaeology and what an archaeologist does not do! Now the students know that archaeologists do not dig for dinosaur bones and that they do not go on a wild adventure like Indiana Jones. They also had fun looking at the things or, artifacts, that archaeologists could find. They were most excited when they saw pictures of mummies! We did a crossword puzzle in class after the lesson so they could familiarize what they had just learned. In the upcoming weeks, we will be collaborating with National Taiwan University’s anthropology department on this archaeology unit. The 5th graders are learning about human migration. Last week we discussed the Vietnamese “Boat People” and this week we are discussing the Syrian refugee crisis. The Syrian crisis is currently happening and is a relevant topic for the students. We are taking a look at what is causing such a large migration of people out of Syria and how is the world responding to it. Students show great interest in the topic, and show sympathy for the refugees. Many students are taking it upon themselves to find out more about the crisis. The grade 6 social studies class did a class on the conflicts in Taiwan in the early 1900s. They learned that even though the Japanese did a lot of work in Taiwan such as building modern infrastructure thus benefiting everyone but they also did many horrible things. One of the key focus was on the Wushe Incident where the Seediqs battled the Japanese in 1930. The students learned the importance of cultural traditions of the Seediq people. They also learned the difficult contradictions between modernization and traditional values. The traditional weaving of Seediq/Atayal people were introduced to them because it is very important to the Seediq/Atayal culture.
