This week the third graders were discussing the element of line. The children were able to recall many of the lines they had learned about in the previous year when studying the artwork of Van Gogh. They were then introduced to the names and images of new lines and discussed how artists use line in their artwork. The students are using Geoff Slater’s line paintings as their inspiration to create their own artwork. They were asked to create a Christmas scene and use lines as their medium for adding color. The fourth graders completed a cross curricular project based on their lessons in science. In art, the students were taught how to create a solar system mobile. They were given a template to follow for size but were asked to mix pastels to create the unique colors of the planets. The fifth graders have been learning about and analyzing the work of Leonardo Da Vinci with a focus on The Mona Lisa. They were introduced to the painting and asked to think about how the image would be different if it was created today. Where would she be? How would she look? The sixth graders were looking at the works of Romero Britto. They were asked to create a 3D sculpture made out of clay inspired by the bright abstract paintings of Britto.
As the seasons change, so does what we wear. The first graders started learning about clothes and all the accessories that accompany them. They learned about the right clothes for the right situation whether it’s summer, school time and sleeping time. Kids enjoyed sing along songs and chants to help them remember what they had learned and practice while at home.
Traditions and celebrations were the topic for the second grade class. As we approach Christmas, it made it a very interesting topic to teach the children. They were very interested in learning about other cultures as much as their own. Third and fourth graders continued to learn about grammar and spelling. We also did a quiz to assess our knowledge. The fifth graders have begun learning about powerful forces of nature and how they affect us as humans. They are learning safety precautions and guidelines to survive in case a natural disaster occurs. They have also started working on their projects from the first unit. The sixth graders were learning about heroes and influential people in the world. They have worked on projects that they are going to present in the coming weeks. They also have to present their findings to their classmates. Best, Teacher Paddy and Christina In first grade, we watched two videos on how tadpoles turn into a frog and the life cycle of a butterfly. In second grade, we started learning about aquatic environments, like marshes, swamps, and oceans. They finished watching a video about oceans. In third grade, we took a quiz about weather and the water cycle. The students surprised me with their aptitude in these areas, despite our quick discussion of these concepts. In fourth grade, we began making our own stories about the water cycle. I’m pleasantly surprised with how creative these students can be when left to their own devices. Students were asked to make a story that is fun to read but will also educate the reader about the water cycle. I have students writing stories about rain drops, and gas particles, and even Greek gods! In fifth grade, we took our quiz on water, weather, and climate. Then we began learning about rocks and minerals.
