These few weeks, the first grade have been doing the Mondrian project. First of all, the students had to know what the elements of art are and then they could figure out what elements were used in Mondrian’s style paintings. They have got a basic idea of how to make pieces like this artist. They created a grid with vertical lines and horizontal lines. After, they filled it in with a few colors like red, yellow, blue and black. At the end of the project, we made Mondrian style animals by trying to add the design to the animal drawings. It was fantastic! it. Even though Van Gogh’s stories are a little bit strange and scary, the second graders really love this artist and his artwork. First, we did a pre-study before starting the big one. In the pre-study, we knew that he was very poor but he dedicated himself a lot to art. Then we started to talk about his lifetime and the development of his art style based on his artistic works in different periods. When I told them the ear story, they were shocked but after they realized he had an argument with his best friend and that he had mental issues, it helped them understand how he felt back then. We focused on one of his masterpieces called “Starry Night” and tried recreating the dramatic night sky with swirls, a crescent moon and shining stars. This week we have been wrapping up the projects we have been working on. Third Graders finished their Renoir Umbrellas and really worked hard on blending colors and using value just as Pierre-Auguste Renoir.Fourth Graders finished their City/Landscape pictures and created colorful captions of the city and country life just as Justin Vining does. Fifth Graders finished drawing their Hand Henna Tattoo project and carefully created delicate lines just as Bharathi Sanghani does. Sixth Graders have been finishing their Abstract Creation project and creatively captured the color liveliness of Romero Britto.
