In first grade, the main topic of science class for the past week was the sky. We talked about the day sky and the night sky. We also talked about the sun, and how it changes position during the course of the day. In second grade, we learned the similarities and the differences in animals and plants. The same kind of plants and animals have many similarities but they also have many differences. I used people as an example of how we can look very different; some people are taller, some people have different skin colors, some of us have curly hair. They did a crossword puzzle for homework, most of the answers can be found on the textbook and many of the students did very well. In third grade, we explored the properties of SOUND! Low sounds, high sounds; soft sounds, loud sounds. The kids enjoyed learning about sound by making their own instrument with a long piece of string and their desk. They investigated how sound changes if the string is longer or shorter. In the fourth and fifth grades, we are continuing our science experiments and beginning to write up our reports and make our powerpoint presentations. The topics of the students' science experiments vary greatly, from questions about plants to ice cubes, but the PROCESS of science and experimentation is the same. Students are putting their knowledge of the scientific method into action and learning important teamwork skills along the way! In sixth grade, we started learning about mixtures. We also learned that there are different kinds of mixtures like solution. We learned that there are different ways to separate mixtures like magnetism, filtration, evaporation, and etc.... This class is very important for the students because mixture is a fundamental idea that they need to understand for the upcoming small activity in which they would put what they have learned into use.
