In grade one, we learned how we get goods that we may need or want. We role played a store in which coloring pictures were sold. Each student was given 100NTD and was asked to line up and make a single purchase using the money in exchange for a coloring picture. The pictures were random and often were not what the students wanted. Once all the students had purchased their pictures they were given the opportunity to trade them among each other. The concept of trading or bartering and buying or selling was the driving force behind this lesson. This lesson will be followed up with a similar lesson whereby students are asked to give feedback as to where they bought the item and with whom they made a trade. In grade two, we discussed our vocabulary for the current chapter. We formulated six categories related to what we need and what we want. As a class we came up different examples within each category. Upon completion the students were divided into multiple groups, each was given a category and asked to draw a picture related to their category. Though students have yet to complete the tasks, they produced posters which will be used as visual aids in the classroom. The idea of the lesson is to have them present the posters both verbally and visually in the classroom showing an understanding of each word by means of their own examples. In grade five, we reviewed migration and what the concept entails. We created a mind map the showed how migration is broken up and what the process entails. Upon completion we looked at case studies of young immigrants and learned what their experiences were like in terms of the positive and the negative. Emphasis was placed on a specific case of a boy who was a refugee and how his experience differed from the rest. Students were able to find both differences and similarities which become the basis of my main focus which was refugees. We continued from this introduction and thereby introduced the “Boat People”. Our lesson was guided by a worksheet and discussions were present throughout. The lesson has yet to be completed but students found it interesting and requested that I teach them more. Landforms And Halloween Fun with Teacher BettyThe jack-o'-lantern is integral to Halloween. Halloween, which falls on October 31st each year, originated with the Celts of ancient England and Ireland. The celebration signaled the end of the harvest and the start of winter. On that day, we worked on the orange head worksheet for reviewing grid map. We also learned the story of Halloween and had fun trick-or-treating. The topic of this week was land forms. We started by reviewing seven continents and five oceans. We introduced plains, plateaus, and hills in Taiwan. We discussed the effect of water and how it plays a part in the erosion of these landforms. The Archaeological Dig With Teacher StevenThis week has been an exciting week for the grade 4s. We started the archaeological excavation demo! For the demo this year, I have simplified the procedures so everything could run smoother than last year and the result was far better than I had imagined! The students needed to learn how to dig first. The kids also needed to learn how to record correctly like a real archaeologist. The students found various things inside their box like, bones, stone tools, pottery pieces and replicas, shells, and this year's cool new addition, HUMAN TEETH! Please don't worry; the teeth have already been disinfected by one of our parents (a dentist) from grade 2. The kids had lots of fun digging and anticipating of what they could find next. Overall, this year's demo has been a great success and an improvement from last two year's. Visit the Er Xin Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/erxinenglish/ for pictures. The grade 6, we finished the lesson on Taiwan's role in World War II. We learned the sad history from that time and the horror at the end of the war. For our second lesson of the week, we strayed off from Taiwanese history by looking at the the big event that took place in America, the presidential election of 2016. The students learned the electoral system in America and about how people vote differently in different parts of the country. For the Geneva class, we followed closely to the election live while the Lugano class learned more on the city of New York (because the election had ended the day before).
